Hey, jelly beans! Today, I'm very excited to bring you my first beauty haul. NYX is a brand that's always been on my radar - their products are affordable, and the quality rivals some of the most expensive makeup brands. However, until recently NYX was quite difficult to get hold of in the UK. When my local Boots finally started stocking it, I picked up a bunch of NYX products and thought that it would be a good opportunity for a little 'shop-and-tell'. Hope you enjoy!
NYX Concealer Jar in Fair (£5.50) & NYX Shine Killer Primer (£11)
I'm always on the lookout for a new concealer, and after reading so many positive reviews I decided to give the Concealer Jar a try! Unfortunately, I accidentally purchased a shade that's too light, so I haven't actually had much use for it. The texture is smooth, easy to apply and blend, although I'd like the consistency to be a bit thicker. This works nicely as an under-eye concealer, but any redness and spots will require something a little more heavy duty.
As for the primer, I'm really disappointed! The texture is strangely gooey (it feels like it's loaded with silicon), it takes ages to absorb into the skin and it does absolutely NOTHING for my makeup! It doesn't control the shine at all, and I honestly think I'd be better off applying foundation on bare skin than using this... Whilst I don't mind the concealer, I doubt I will be repurchasing either of these products.
NYX High Definition Blush in Amber (£5.50)
This is probably my favourite purchase of the entire haul! This powder blush has a lovely, silky texture; it's easy to apply and gives the skin a natural, healthy glow. I find that some powder blushes can be a little chalky and difficult to apply without overdoing it (especially when they're highly pigmented, like this one). The High Definition blush however is lovely to work with, and easily buildable if you want more colour intensity. The shade is gorgeous and perfect for the summer. Although it looks a little orange-y in the packaging, it actually comes out as a rosy pink with warm undertones.
NYX Studio Finishing HD Powder (£8) and NYX Proof It! Waterproof Eyeshadow Primer (£5.50)
The finishing powder was actually a re-purchase. I first tried it a few months back, and have been loving it ever since! My skin is extremely oily, and this is one of the very few powders that actually helps me control the shine. The powder is white in the packaging, but it becomes completely translucent when applied. It gives my skin a natural, matte finish that lasts nearly all day. The only downside is that it is very messy to work with, and gets everywhere when you apply it (I accidentally spilled half the jar on the carpet the other day!).
As for the eyeshadow primer, it actually ended up being a pretty good dupe for my all-time favourite (but also very overpriced) Primer Potion by Urban Decay. This primer is just as effective - it makes your eyeshadow last all day, without creasing or smudging. I will probably start purchasing this one instead of the Primer Potion going forward, as it gives identical results for a fraction of the price.
NYX Glam Aqua Luxe Lip Glosses in High Society and VIP (£7)
I loved the look of these glosses in the packaging, but unfortunately, they ended up being a bit of a let-down. I was hoping for a nice tint of colour, but these shades are actually very sheer, and barely show up when applied. The glitter might be too much even for me! There is just so much of it, and it stays on the lips even after the lip gloss itself has worn off. I don't really like wearing these glosses on their own, but I think they might be nice when applied over a lipstick. The formula is creamy, smooth and not sticky at all, although it has zero lasting power. I'll write up a full review sometime soon, including proper swatches.
Overall, I'm relatively happy with my purchases, especially the blush and the eyeshadow primer. The face primer was the biggest let-down, which is disappointing considering that it was also the most expensive product on the list! It seems that a lot of brands don't really know how to handle oily skin types - Benefit's Porefessional primer is the only one that's actually ever worked for me. As for NYX, their makeup is pretty good value for money (for the most part), although I expected more from the lip glosses and the face primer. I'm still quite keen on trying more of their products, and I'm very tempted to buy out the entire High Definition blush range!
